Another Man’s Treasure Book Tour

AMT

Hi! We’re Lisa Henry and J.A. Rock, authors of Another Man’s Treasure. We’re touring the web talking about our influences, our crazy ideas, this new book, and even giving you a sneak peek or two! And of course there’s a giveaway involved! Check out the bottom of this post to see how you can win.

Thanks so much to our host blogs for having us, and to everyone following the tour. Today, Lisa interviews JA.

Lisa: I seriously can’t remember if this story was your idea or mine. Does this mean that we’ve finally reached our goal of combining our brains into one smut-and-torture-filled hive-mind, or does it just mean I should pay more attention to details?

I think it’s the first one. We might have finally reached this stage.

I remember you sent me the picture of the guy with the corset piercing, so you can take the credit. I do remember it was one of my favorites to brainstorm. That was the night I’d had all that tea and had to pee every five minutes. So I’d send you an email, go to the bathroom, and when I’d come back, there’d be an email from you, and so on. Great system.

Lisa: If there’s one thing you would want to tell readers about AMT, what is it?

It’s not just about torture! Here’s the thing: I love writing violence. I love exploring the whys and hows of it, and I have a lot of ideas for how to torture people—and I mean that in the least creepy way possible. HOWEVER, I am not a fan of torture porn. I don’t like the Saws and the Hostels where the characters are just objects to enact inventive cruelties upon. Too often I think violence is used as a shortcut to get a reaction, and explicitness as a substitute for an honest understanding of why we hurt each other. So what I HOPE we’ve given readers are characters complex enough that the book is not about the violence; it’s about where we find the strength to survive brutality, and about the different ways we love—or try to love—and why we hold onto human connection in even the most horrific circumstances.

Lisa: Who’s your favourite character in this?

The dog. Always the dog. Who gets significantly less page time here than most of our canine characters. But as far as humans, I like Ilia. I know he’s kind of a fuckface—selfish and immature and confused. But aren’t we all?

Lisa: And who was the most fun to write?

Louis. I’m such a sucker for troubled parent-child relationships, and Louis is so awful, and so frustrating because he doesn’t even understand why he’s awful. I love it!

Lisa: Did any of our characters surprise you in any way? (We’re pantsers, not plotters. We’re constantly surprised by characters, plot twists, and even what day it is. Especially what day it is.)

The date, time, and year are perpetual sources of surprise to me. Also the amount of undone laundry and the location of my keys.

You know, our characters always surprise me. I love that about writing. I think here we did end up with some significant differences between the book we wrote and the book we “planned.” Patrick ended up being a more forceful character than our original sketch led me to believe he’d be.

Lisa: In the blurb you wrote for AMT (Thanks for that, BTW. I owe you a drink or something.) you describe it is a psychological thriller. And I’m kind of glad you did, because I had no idea how to categorise it. If you could create your own genre for this, what would it be called?

Progressive torture porn?

Lisa: In a chess match between the Kadyrov brothers, who would win? What about a cage fight?

I think Nick could beat Mikhail at chess. Even though Nick is a fuck-up, he does seem cleverer than Mikhail somehow. Though if chess victories are a measure of cleverness, I’m in trouble. Mikhail will win the cage fight. Mikhail’s Thor and Nick’s Loki. Except they’re both criminals and they don’t have superpowers.

Lisa: Similar question for Ilia and Patrick, except they’re playing Mario Kart on the Nintendo 64. Which characters do they play, and who wins Toad’s Turnpike? Driving against the flow of traffic.

Ilia’s got Patrick there. He’s actually played video games, while Patrick just watches youtube videos of other people playing them. Although if anyone in the world has the patience to deal with that reverse traffic…it’s probably Patrick.

Wahoo!!

About Another Man’s Treasure:

Ilia Porter is Chechen mob boss Mikhail Kadyrov’s greatest treasure. After leaving home at eighteen to escape his verbally abusive father, beautiful, selfish Ilia has lived with Mikhail, proud of his ability to bring such a powerful man to his knees to worship. But when Ilia’s father, a police captain, kills Mikhail in a raid, Ilia’s world falls apart.

Entering to pick up the pieces is Mikhail’s younger brother, Nick—impulsive, power-hungry, and dangerous. When Nick tells Ilia he’s taking everything that belonged to Mikhail—including Ilia—Ilia is too lost in grief to fight. Nick holds Ilia prisoner in the apartment Ilia once shared with Mikhail and grooms him for a very important mission: to kill Ilia’s father and avenge Mikhail’s death.

Ilia wants no part in the plot, but being Nick’s ally is preferable to being Nick’s victim, so he begins to warp himself into the monster Nick wants him to be. Hope arrives when Nick takes another captive: Patrick, a shy massage therapist who’s stronger than he seems. Patrick and Ilia must join forces to escape Nick—and to keep each other whole as Nick does everything in his power to break them.

About the Authors

Lisa Henry lives in tropical North Queensland, Australia. She doesn’t know why, because she hates the heat, but suspects she’s too lazy to move. She spends half her time slaving away as a government minion, and the other half plotting her escape.

She attended university at sixteen, not because she was a child prodigy or anything, but because of a mix-up between international school systems early in life. She studied History and English, neither of them very thoroughly.

She shares her house with too many cats, a dog, a green tree frog that swims in the toilet, and as many possums as can break in every night. This is not how she imagined life as a grown-up.

J.A. Rock

J.A. Rock has worked as a dog groomer, knife seller, haunted house zombie, standardized patient, cashier, census taker, state fair quilt hanger, and, for one less-than-magical evening, a server—and would much rather be writing about those jobs than doing them. J.A. lives mostly in West Virginia, and always with a beloved dog, Professor Anne.
