Aspiring writer Brent Granger has good friends and a great job at an arts magazine in DC, but he’s batting zero in the arena of love. Brent begins to get a clue why things aren’t working with women from his strong attraction to his gorgeous, gay, and already attached boss, Graham Stoneford. When he sees a personal ad from a man that quotes his favorite poet, Brent decides to do something wild and answer.

Enter Cody Bellstrom, easygoing bisexual musician, who is happy to initiate Brent in the ways of gay sex. Brent now has a new problem: he realizes he’s gay and no one in his life knows it. Cody tires of hiding their relationship, but Brent finds it challenging to come out to family, friends, and especially to Graham. In the end, Brent must confront the truth of where – and with whom – his heart lies.

Excerpt:

As Brent sat cross-legged on a pillow, tearing pieces off the rubbery bread and dipping them into various dishes he couldn’t identify, he realized he was having more fun than he’d had in ages. Along with being thoughtful and smart, Graham was one of the most hilarious people he’d ever met, and Brent was in stitches for most of their lunch.

“If only my dates could be like this,” Brent said, after another bout of laughter between them, then widened his eyes. “Oh, wow, man, that sounded dumb.”

Graham didn’t seem fazed. “They’re not? But why? You’re so fun to talk to. Any woman would be nuts not to appreciate you.”

“Uh, well, tell them that. But I guess I don’t really appreciate them either. I don’t know, it’s like, awkward and boring most of the time. Whatever. Ari keeps trying to set me up, but…. Anyway, how did this get into talking about my love life, or lack thereof?”

Graham regarded him, warmth in his eyes, and said softly, “You’ll find it, Brent. Everyone deserves to have love in their life. You’re young. You’ll find it.”

Graham’s words touched Brent, but the intensity of the moment made him uncomfortable. Even worse, he noticed he was getting aroused.

He shifted on his pillow with a weak laugh. “Hey, no more of this ‘young’ crap, okay? You’re not that much older than I am.”

Interview

*****Our friends at Book Suburbia had a crash of their site yesterday, so we’re thrilled to have CJane visit Parker again and talk about whether the seasons influence a writer*****

Book Suburbia – January 16, 2015

Do the seasons influence a writer? What does it mean for an author to write in the winter vs summer? Does it matter at all? And if so, what could be any possible noticeable difference? Does your muse shuts down entirely if the sun goes down too early?

I think the seasons influence me because of the effect of sunlight on mood. I tend towards depression in the winter, as do many writers I know, and it’s hard to find the words or the motivation to write during those times. I also work 32 hours a week and although I bring my manuscript with every intention to write at lunch, it’s often not possible. In the winter especially, by the time I get back from work and it’s cold and dark, I can’t always find the energy to write in the evenings.

This winter hasn’t been as hard and the difference for me is exercise. I’ve been exercising consistently 4 to 5 times a week. I notice that I have some energy left over in the evenings and it’s easier in general to stay motivated and keep cranking out those words.

(The excerpt is from estrus (or heat) for Dale.)
Keyno slapped his hands on his hips, the image of a posturing male. “Dammit, Dale, eat first. You can worry about taking a shower in a minute.”
“Okay, I don’t mean to sound gross, but I need to clean up or you need to get me a towel to sit on.” I could see he still didn’t get it. “Come on, Keyno. You flooded me when you came. If I get up…” He was still giving me a blank look. “Keyno, what goes in must come out. You get what I’m saying?”
Keyno smirked at my look as he sat down next to me. “Nothing is going to come out. Hormones from the release of the eggs makes the semen clot, keeping it in your body. You’re not a human male anymore, chosen. That gorgeous body of yours is made for this.”
I sat up, crossed my legs Indian style, and waited to see if I was going to be sitting in a puddle. Sure enough, I didn’t feel anything leak out of me. Sighing deeply, I dug in. “What the hell? Are you hedging your bets to make sure I get pregnant, or what?”

At the turn of the twentieth century, Henry Simpkins is a valet at Taverslow, the Earl of Wayshaw’s Somerset home. When the Earl’s younger brother, Rafe, arrives from his villa in Italy, Henry is given the task of caring for his mischievous dogs, Pepe and Paolo. As part of his duties, he also goes to Rafe’s room each night to tidy away his clothes.

One night, Rafe tentatively asks Henry to go beyond his valet duties to relieve Rafe’s sexual tensions. Henry enjoys their increasingly intimate encounters, but he’s soon disturbed to find he feels more for Rafe than mere physical attraction.

Now, Henry faces a difficult decision. Can he remain in the same house as Rafe if his affections are not returned?

Excerpt:

The next few nights passed in a similar way, with Henry nodding and smiling, and sometimes laughing, when Rafe talked of his life in Umbria. Falling to sleep each night in his narrow bed, Henry found himself dreaming of orange trees and vineyards. Sometimes he even dreamt of Rafe wandering among them in the Mediterranean sun, but on the fourth night when Henry went to Rafe’s room, something had changed.

Rafe seemed on edge as he opened the door, and he sat on the sofa in silence as Henry carried out his tasks.

Henry started to leave, when Rafe spoke at last, an unfamiliar tension in his voice. “Simpkins, could I ask you something?”

“Of course, sir.”

Rafe gazed intently at his fingernails, giving Henry no clue as to what he might ask. His eyes remained lowered as he made his enquiry.

“Simpkins, are you—are you the same kind of man as Oscar Wilde?

Author Bio:

L M lives in a small village in the English countryside, surrounded by rolling hills, cows and sheep. She started writing to fill time between jobs and is now firmly and unashamedly addicted.

She loves the English weather, especially the rain, and adores a thunderstorm. She loves good food, warm company and a crackling fire. She’s fascinated by the psychology of relationships, especially between men, and her stories contain some subtle (and not so subtle) leanings towards BDSM.

SERIES:

Being thrown together in extreme circumstances is not the best foundation for a relationship. Alex and Conor must juggle the demands of their jobs as police detectives with their personal lives. With Alex as demanding in the bedroom as he is at work, will Conor be able to accept that submission is not weakness. Finding out will be the most important investigation of their lives.

Rasputin’s Kiss:

What if the last thing you felt was the kiss of a knife?

Rasputin’s kiss is lethal. He’s a ghost—killing and disappearing into the night. With few leads and four bodies on his conscience, Detective Inspector Alex Courtney and his team are running on empty and it’s only a matter of time before Rasputin strikes again.

When Alex recruits a young detective to play the part of his boyfriend and provide a tempting target for a killer, he knows he is taking a huge risk. He doesn’t expect Conor Trethuan to be a perfect potential submissive. When their mutual attraction becomes more, Alex has to face the conflict between his possessive instincts and the need to push his young lover into danger.

Investigating their feelings has to come second to investigating the case. There’s no time to decide if what they feel for each other is real. With Rasputin closing in, they may not live to find out.

Evil’s Embrace:

Never underestimate the power of obsession.

After the trauma of the Rasputin case, Detective Inspector Alex Courtney and his boyfriend, Detective Constable Conor Trethuan, are in desperate need of a holiday.

The peace and tranquillity of Cornwall can’t eradicate Conor’s nightmares, though, and the unbearable prospect of losing Alex drives him to confess feelings that he isn’t sure are reciprocated. Alex responds in the best way he knows how—by issuing orders and claiming Conor’s body as well as his heart.

Prematurely recalled to work, they are thrown into a dangerous trafficking case focused on a leather bar with a hardcore reputation, Spikes. Conor is sent in undercover, not knowing that he is only a decoy. When Alex learns that the motivation behind his team’s involvement in the case might not be as straightforward as it seems, he realises that his actions might jeopardise not just their relationship, but Conor’s life, too. A shadowy figure from Conor’s past is about to step into the light.

Tarot’s Touch:

Can truth be found in the cards?

DI Alex Courtney and his lover, DC Conor Trethuan are under enormous pressure as their team investigates an arson case and a murder.

It soon becomes apparent that the two cases are linked and the race is on to find a vicious killer. A tarot card is left with the first victim and the detectives are left to interpret the clues it provides. When Conor receives a note from the killer making reference to another card, the whole team is shaken. Their worst fears are realised when a second body is discovered, along with another tarot card.

Conor suspects he has been followed, then a hit and run leaves him injured. Alex wants nothing more than to wrap his lover up in cotton wool and protect him from the world. But is Conor the killer’s target or just a pawn in a much more sinister game? As the clues come together it seems that the motive for murder might be revenge.

Interview

Q: How did the Investigating Love series come about?

Though not the first story I had published, Rasputin’s Kiss was actually the first story I ever wrote. It started out about forty thousand words shorter and the story changed quite significantly, but the characters of Alex and Conor have stayed the same. When I began, I already had a series in mind. All three books, plus a short story spin-off took around two years to complete as I was working on other things at the same time.

Q: Can you tell us about your writing process?

I carry a notepad around to scribble down plot ideas when they strike me. I rough out a plot line but don’t plan too rigidly because sometimes the story takes its own direction, but I usually have a firm ending in mind. I often write scenes several times before I’m happy with them and as a result, I’m painfully slow.
Q: Would you change anything in your life to make writing easier.

Give up the evil day job. Definitely. And persuade the cat that my laptop is not his bed.

Q: Do you write one novel at a time or do you move between works in progress?

I usually have two or three stories on the go and write where the mood takes me.

Q. What motivates you to write?

It’s my relaxation and addiction. If I have a few spare minutes I can’t resist tapping out a few lines.

Q. Is this the last we’ll see of Alex and Conor?

No, they’ll definitely be back. I love the characters too much to let them go, but it will be a while as I have a lot of other commitments in the next year.

Keep your lovers close—and your enemies in bed.

TURK

My club sent me to track him down. And when my mission was over, I never wanted another one again. When I found him, I kicked the shit out of Havelock Singer. I issued the mightiest beatdown of all time. Problem is, we’re evenly matched. We’re equals in every way, and when we finished whaling on each other, exhausted, we fell into each other’s arms.

I’ve never regretted it for an instant. It’s been the ride of my life. But loving another man in the MC world is a risky business. As if our business isn’t already brutal and ruthless enough, Lock’s homophobic sergeant-at-arms Stumpy gets an eyeful of our lovemaking and blackmails us into doing some of his dirty work, or be exposed for what we are—a couple of deviants.

This run into the Indian reservation is sleazy and beneath us, but now I’m cornered, and I’ll do anything to keep my sweet master Lock from being lynched by his club.

LOCK

When that kingpin Carmine Rojas got a load of my beautiful stallion Turk Blackburn, he’d stop at nothing to have him—and Rojas gets what he wants. It’s my fault we’re in this situation. I should’ve kicked Turk’s ass and sent him packing back to The Bare Bones. I wasn’t even close to being ready to come out, but now they’re forcing my hand.

I can hear my destiny calling me. Either I’ll slink back to my club like a hetero bounty hunter with no morals—and no respect from anyone in my own backyard—or I’ll step up to the plate and be the lion of the day.

Either way, my lover and I are screwed. Our clubs are going to hound us underground or into another country before we escape this mess—if we don’t die trying.

“Living off the grid and being an outlaw brings a dangerous reality.” –Ron Perlman
