Jody took a shuddering breath, so Chase moved forwards the few inches between them and put his hand over Jody’s mouth. He was still shaking and Chase feared he would disturb a mop or bottle in the cupboard, which would clatter about. So he moved even closer, covering Jody’s body with his to keep him still and quiet. Jody sagged against him with a sigh, his head slumping onto Chase’s shoulder, his heart pounding against his chest. Although Chase’s heart wasn’t beating much slower.
“Where the fuck is it?” said a voice outside. “You try the music room, it’s probably in that fucking piano. Smash it up to look.”
Jody made a quiet noise of indignation, but Chase held him firmly. His job was to protect this annoying kid, whatever it took. He was getting far too hot in the tiny cupboard pressed against someone more agitated than he was, but he was determined not to move a muscle.
The voice moved away and they both took deep breaths. Jody stank—the hot sweat smell of fear and body heat almost suffocated Chase, but it wasn’t unpleasant, it set his body tingling.
He let Jody go a little but there was no room to back away in the cramped cupboard.
“They were both dead,” mumbled Jody, his hot breath tickling Chase’s neck with the odd wet touch of his lips too. “My beautiful cousin. Dead and covered in blood. How could someone do that? I’ll never see my lovely girl again, we must get the police and—”
“Listen,” whispered Chase, right in his ear. “You must keep quiet. We’ve got to get out of here fast.”
