Author Bio

2014-04-05_Headshot-FB-profile

Raised in California, Laura likes it hot, which explains why she ended up in Arizona via such diverse places as Japan, Maine, and Florida, and many more places in between. After retiring from the US Navy, she found a niche working for land management agencies, including the National Park Service and the Bureau of Land Management. Though she has held many jobs around the world, her favorite was working and living in Grand Canyon National Park. Working (and eating) in New Orleans was a close second. You will find many of her books are set against the rich backdrops provided by coastal Louisiana and northern Arizona.

When asked how she started writing, Laura tells of waking on Boxing Day a few years ago, with a woman named Elena MacFarland yammering in her dreams, demanding her story be told. Despite never attempting to write fiction before that morning, Laura ignored all of the holiday visitors and the Highland Destiny series was born. She doesn’t believe it was a coincidence that the great grandmother who died when Laura was just a baby was named Elena MacFarland. Destiny does play a hand.

Laura became a full-time writer in 2012, and now she spends her time writing, watching her Arizona Diamondbacks, and working on her very own version of the Willow Springs Ranch in northwestern Arizona. She is a multi-published author of erotic romance, mystery, and urban fantasy and her books can be found at all major online retailers.”

 Book 1 – Ty Hard

Tyler has used Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell as a shield against the truth since he was seventeen. Cut loose from his Navy career and mourning his mentor’s death, Ty must come to terms with his desire for another man, even while he fights to keep his PTSD from pulling him under. Rancher Cass Cartwright’s relationships never last more than a few hours, and that’s just the way he likes it. Now he’s done the one thing he swore never to do: fallen in love. Can Cass convince Ty to let go of his past or will sabotage at the ranch kill their love before it has a chance to grow?

Book 2 – Hold Tight

Sheriff Holden Titus had organized his fresh start down to the last detail. Except for the part about the bomb that blew his plans all to hell. Now he’s running out of time, without a job, without a home, and struggling to get back on his feet. Literally.

Despite the impolite rejection, Drew knows he didn’t have the wrong impression months ago when he asked the sheriff to dance, but he never expected to have Holden’s life in his hands. Literally.

Thanks to some meddlesome matchmaking, the two men are now temporary housemates at the Willow Springs Ranch and Drew is determined to help Holden heal, both physically and emotionally. Even if it means he has to drag the other man kicking and screaming to physical therapy…and out of the closet. In fact, that might be kind of fun.

The problem is, Holden doesn’t consider himself in the closet…but not all secrets are created equal.

Book 3 – Taking Chance

Officer Chance Carter is pretty sure he’d still enjoy being on either end of a good ass reaming—just not the one from his supervisor that lands him on an involuntary extended vacation. Another holiday season with nothing to do except visit an old friend.

Former hospital corpsman Bryan Mitchell doesn’t feel less than honorable, but that’s what his discharge paperwork states. Now he’s down and out in Kingman, Arizona until the charity of a stranger lands him a temporary job for the holidays.

When two federal employees go missing during a highly controversial wild horse roundup, the two Willow Springs Ranch newcomers are drafted to help in the search, but if rumors of a local anti-government militia are true, Chance and Bryan may be in serious trouble—and from something far more dangerous than their mutual attraction.

Book 3.5 – Ty’d Down (free short)

Ty brushed his hands on the long white apron and moved to the island counter to add more frosting to the piping bag. Cake decorating had never been his favorite chef duty, but like many cooks in the Navy, he had plenty of experience. He took another sip of coffee then began the final step of piping the white border around the edge of the top layer. He would add the already prepared red roses, last. As peace offerings went, a chocolate three-layer cake with buttercream icing wasn’t much, but Cass would forgive him. Eventually.

Today should have been their wedding day, but Ty had put a stop to all the foolishness weeks ago. For fuck’s sake, Arizona didn’t even have gay marriage. The gathering of friends for a commitment ceremony just seemed…stupid. Besides, Cass had just been caught up in the events surrounding Chance and Bryan’s rescue when he’d proposed. The truth of their relationship had been plain as day when Cass tried to take over the conversation after Bryan had been rescued. The words still echoed in his head.

“It’s my ranch…my decision…” Cass was boss and Ty the cook. Point taken. Ty wasn’t even bitter. Much. Cass was right, this was his ranch and Ty had usurped his authority—but goddamn it! No one here was better than Ty when it came to running a covert mission. Cass should have respected him enough…trusted him enough…

Book 4 – Hanging Chad

For Chad Ollom, landing on the Willow Springs Ranch after his teaching career crashed and burned last year was a lesson in irony, considering he’d sworn off all things related to horses and cowboys after a near fatal fall as a child. Now with a new mission in life, Chad plans to bring critically ill children to the ranch for a special celebration.

Aging rodeo cowboy Jesse Duran lives life eight seconds at a time, and whether it’s broncos or men, it’s always been get on and get off before anyone gets hurt. When he’s required to take a break from the circuit and ends up on the WSR, the enticing ass of a stand-offish teacher turned contractor might just be enough challenge to keep him entertained for a week or two.

As attraction flares, personal boundaries start to crumble, and the lines between seducer and seduced begin to blur. When the series of on-going attacks against the WSR moves from sabotage to arson, Jesse steps up to help, but when Chad is forced to return to his past to face charges, the men of the WSR want to know if Jesse will stick or leave Chad hanging.

Book 5 – Park’s Lot

When vegan, peace-loving, social do-gooder Park Williams stumbles across the half-dead cattle rancher who has been sabotaging the Willow Springs Ranch in the name of a homophobic militia group…there’s only one thing to do. Save his life, then share his tent. Waking to find the man’s dick pressed against his ass is just a bonus.

Tanner Triplett is in trouble. Not the your-brother-is-a-sociopathic-murderer-and-you’re-his-next-victim sort of trouble. Not even the your-father-is-trying-to-overthrow-the-federal-government-and-you’re-going-to-jail-for-helping kind of trouble. No…this is the sort of trouble that comes when you wake up with stranger’s dick in your hand. Holy fuck. How is he going to get out of this?

A sudden need to run for their lives ought to do it.

Determined to make amends, Tanner leads Park to the relative safety of the WSR, where the biggest danger should be from gun-wielding cowboys seeking revenge. Tanner hadn’t counted on sharing a room with the exotically beautiful Park or the danger to his heart when the carefully erected walls protecting his secret come tumbling down.

Since the dawn of human expression, man has gazed up at the heavens in wonder, inspired by the wheeling of the stars to explain his surroundings. While our perception of those surroundings have changed, from thinking of the Earth as a flat, stable plane to realizing we’re falling through space in a tiny atmospheric bubble, our wonder remains constant.

Space stations, alien races, far-flung planets—join the Mischief Corner authors as they explore the possibilities the stars might offer. The catch? Returning to mundane old Earth might be harder than you think.

The Usual Conventions: Unconve

Teaser Excerpt

Brodeich Geinn sat at the table with his chin and cheek balanced in his cupped hand, taking advantage of a welcome lull in the activity at their end of the conference room. Not for the first time, his gaze landed on the lithe, beautiful form of the human, Chris Myers. He moved confidently around the room, weaving in and out of the crowd almost unnoticed as he checked on the tables, restocking merchandise and delivering bottles of water to the weary performers.

“Huh.” Tara, the government agent assigned to the task of acclimating Brodeich and his companions to Earth life, plopped down in the chair next to him. “I never would have pegged you for being gay.”

“Gay?” Brodeich asked, searching his memory for the unfamiliar word.

Tara rolled her eyes and nodded in Chris’s direction. “Interested in men.”

Brodeich frowned. “Of course I am interested in men,” he replied. “They are fascinating. Such a rich history for so short a span of time.”

“No, I mean sexually.” Tara huffed, shaking her head. “You’ve been watching Mr. Myers all morning. You’ve barely taken your eyes off him. And that tells me you want to fuck him.”

“Tara!”

Tara’s blunt manner never failed to shock him. Brodeich’s race valued good manners and delicacy of speech, especially in their women.

“Would it work, do you think?” Tara asked, drumming her fingers against the table.

“Would what work?”

“Sex!” Tara exclaimed just a little too loudly. Several heads turned to look in their direction and a few snickers filled the air. Not that Tara seemed to notice.

“Can you put your scaly dick inside a person or can’t you? Particularly a male person.” Tara raised an eyebrow and gestured toward Chris.

Brodeich looked at the other man again and sighed. His blond-brown hair fell a little too long over his forehead and he kept having to brush it away from his stunning green eyes. He was quick to laugh and seemed to smile about everything. His neck was long and pale, rising out of broad shoulders that topped a trim torso held up by long, long legs. And best of all, Chris had a tiny round butt that poked out just enough to fill Brodeich’s mind with wicked, wonderful ideas.

“Yes,” Brodeich breathed, staring at Chris’s backside as he bent over to talk to one of the characters seated across the room. “The human body is said to be very compatible with our own. In fact…” Brodeich gave Tara a sideways look. “Your kind are highly sought after as mates among my people, and many other.”

Brodeich lowered his voice and leaned closer to the woman. “Have you forgotten Hielo is the product of such a union?”

“Hielo was a science experiment. How do I know his parents ever actually did it?” Tara waved her hand dismissively in Hielo’s direction.

Egg-laying species like the Korelims and Budgeons could not create offspring with a human naturally. The conception and birth of the treasured half-breed had required the skilled medical intervention of a team of both Budgeon and Korelimean doctors and scientists.

“It is rumored that intercourse with a human is life altering, that everything else pales by comparison.” Hielo’s father had given up a respected position in the military and the chance of a political career when he mated with Hielo’s mother.

“Yeah? Then why the hell haven’t you tried it yet?” The look on Tara’s face was incredulous. “You’re a celebrity, Brody. You could be banging a different person every night of the week and two on Sunday.”

Brodeich shook his head. For him, promiscuity had long ago lost its appeal as a lifestyle. The act of copulation aboard the Harec Y’shol had served as an outlet for sexual frustration or to establish dominance. The physical release experienced from such couplings was, of course, enjoyable, however, for Brodeich the encounters only served to strengthen his desire for a single, permanent life-mate. The lonely despair he always felt afterwards far outweighed the excitement of coitus in Brodeich’s mind.

“God, you’re such a damn prude!” Tara laughed. “Please tell me you’ll at least make a play for this one, hmm? You have so got to get laid.”

“Had I not been laid I would not be here,” Brodeich retorted. He shuddered at the vague, distant memory of fighting his way out of a thick, rubbery eggshell into a harsh winter’s night some thirty-two years earlier.

“I’m not even going to ask.”

Tara leaned back in her chair and crossed her arms over her chest, watching Chris as closely as Brodeich had done all morning.

“He likes you. That much was obvious from the moment he introduced himself,” Tara claimed. “You’ll barely need to hit on him at all to get him to go to bed with you.”

“I’ll not raise a hand to him,” Brodeich told her indignantly. The human looked so delicate, so fragile. Brodeich would never force himself on a man who lacked the power to reject him. “I cannot believe you would even suggest such a thing.”

“Brody, you need to lighten up, man. All I’m suggesting is that you throw a couple of compliments his way and maybe buy him dinner.” Tara shrugged. “If you just let him know you’re interested, he’ll probably take it from there.”

“Dinner and compliments? You mean I should woo him?” Brodeich asked, looking at Chris with new eyes. “Would he really be receptive to my suit, do you think?”

“Honey, I think he’d walk a mile barefoot over rusty nails and broken glass for the chance to bend over for you.”

“Nonsense,” Brodeich replied, but he couldn’t help wondering as he hungrily watched the delectable human. Though he had never encountered one himself, he had heard there were males who welcomed the attention of larger, stronger males and even enjoyed taking the receptive role when coupling.

Just then Chris’s eyes met his. The human smiled and the color of his face changed from a pale cream to a bright crimson. Brodeich smiled back and Chris’s cheeks darkened even more.

Good signs, Brodeich thought, considering Tara’s words and the human’s situation. Brodeich most certainly had a physical advantage over Chris. He had the strength of six or seven human males and a celebrity status that garnered him an earthly fortune that could only add to his appeal. Brodeich had a good deal to offer a potential human mate, and if Chris were the sort of man who sought to be paired with a powerful male partner, he could not do any better.

“I could try to feel him out at least,” Brodeich mused. “Perhaps he will allow me to speak with him during the lunch break.”

“You can skip feeling him out and jump right into feeling him up, buddy, trust me.”

“If I am going to do this, I will do it the right way,” Brodeich insisted. He’d learned enough about human culture to know there were a number of rituals he needed to perform before he could expect a person to spread their legs, especially if he hoped to secure them as his mate. He could easily compel the frail human to engage in intercourse with him, but Brodeich hoped for more than compliance from the sexy man.

“I have never been one to defy convention and I certainly do not intend to stray from the proper protocol while in pursuit of human companionship.” He had his pride after all.

“Fine,” Tara answered. “Do it your way. So long as you end up in bed with him before the weekend is out I don’t give a shit how you get him there.”

“Oh my god!”

The table shook as an excited voice interrupted their conversation. Brodeich looked up to see a short, stocky man with close-cropped dark hair and wide eyes that didn’t match leaning heavily on the other end of the table, staring intently at Goldie.

“I hoped you would be here,” the guy gushed, visibly shaking with his enthusiasm. “You weren’t listed on the website, but you’ve already got a reputation as late registers who sometimes turn up at the last minute, so I took a chance and volunteered to cover this event instead of the concert the other guys were fighting over even though I have seniority and could have picked anything.”

The guy rambled on without stopping for breath, and it would have been comical were it not for the terrified look in Goldie’s eyes. The man held out his hand to Brodeich’s frightened companion, leaning even nearer, almost touching him.

“I’m Gibson Pike, lead researcher and reviewer for The Other Truths magazine. It is such an unexpected pleasure to meet you.”

Brodeich stood and moved between the overeager reporter and the stunned Gauldsthei, taking the human’s hand himself and firmly drawing him away.

“The pleasure is ours, I’m sure.”

Gamma Compound & Peanut Butter and Jelly For Two – Jackie Nacht

Welcome Jackie Nacht! Who is she, you might ask? Well, in her own words:

Short, sexy and sweet—where a little love goes a long way.
That’s the best way to describe Jackie Nacht’s stories. I was introduced to M/M Romance through my sister, Stephani, and read it for years. Then, I thought it was time to put my own stories on paper. I began writing short and sweet stories that ended with a happily ever after…and sometimes more than one, in the case of my YA Fork in the Road series, which has interactive endings.
Thinking back to my own book addiction, where there were many nights I stayed up way too late so I could read just one more chapter—yeah, right—I decided to write short romances for young adults as well as adults. Hopefully, they will give high school and college students, or working men and women something they can read during their lunch hour, in between classes or just when they want to briefly get away from the daily stresses of everyday life.

You can find me on Facebook, Twitter and at my webpage: www.jackienacht.com.

Shifting Sands by Joy Lynn Fielding

SHIFTING SANDS

Author: Joy Lynn Fielding
Publisher: Siren
Cover Art: Christine Kirchoff

Shifting Sands_JLF_Final

Bryce pushed open the door, prepared for another snotty pen pusher like Taylor Cufflinks the Third, or whatever his stupid name had been. Because of that, it took him a moment to process that he was seeing what he thought he was seeing and that he hadn’t found himself in the middle of a really good dream. Except if it was a dream, presumably this guy would already be naked rather than pouring himself a cup of coffee while dressed in a crisp white shirt, open at the neck, and gray slacks that should have been illegal given the way they clung to the curves of a frankly spectacular ass.

If Tom Barrington was a pen pusher, it was a pretty heavy pen he pushed on a regular basis because those were definite muscles betrayed by the fit of his shirt. His hair was dark and just a little wavy, his cheekbones were sharply defined beneath flawless skin, and there was the suspicion of a five-o’clock shadow on his jaw, which somehow emphasized just how strong that jawline was.

Bryce was still staring when Tom looked up and gestured with the mug he was holding. “Hope you don’t mind,” he said, then paused.

Bryce was aware that he was being studied in return and stood a little taller, opening himself up for inspection by rich brown eyes. It seemed Tom liked what he saw, because he looked for longer than was strictly polite. Bryce grinned at him when his eyes returned to Bryce’s face, and Tom suddenly looked away, biting his lip slightly as if he’d been caught doing something he shouldn’t have been. Even that didn’t stop him sending another look sideways at Bryce, and the combination of that with the way his teeth were sinking into his plump lower lip had Bryce’s stomach tightening with arousal. This security check might be a hell of a lot more pleasurable than he’d figured. And he was not thinking about Tom Barrington and body searches in the same breath, because that wasn’t helping things settle down in the least.

“Sorry to have kept you,” he said, and sat down at the table. “I figured you’d be another twelve-year-old.”

Tom stared at him, and then he grinned. It was a really good look on him. “I forgot—you had Bressingham visit you, didn’t you?”

“I wondered if it was ‘take your son to work day’ but mom or dad got lost en route,” Bryce said.

“He’s one of Cheung’s protégés,” Tom said, sitting down opposite Bryce. “He’s got potential, apparently.”

“Or a daddy with deep pockets to contribute to a re-election campaign,” Bryce said, and pushed the sugar bowl across the table. Tom nodded in thanks and took a spoonful.

“So what do you need to know?” Bryce asked, all business again. The thought that the sooner they got business done, the sooner they might get to other things was not in his mind at all. No way.

About the author:

Joy Lynn Fielding is a sucker for happy endings. She believes, however, that if characters don’t suffer along the way, they won’t fully appreciate being happy. Not all of her characters thank her for

this viewpoint, but what do they know?

Joy lives in a small English market town, but also inhabits a number of fictional worlds at any one time, reflecting what she’s writing and what she’s reading. She has a tendency to share enthusiastically with anyone who will listen to the latest fascinating facts she’s stumbled across in her research for books. Thankfully she has a very patient Labrador, who has a gift for looking as though he’s interested in what she’s saying while he waits for the food to arrive.

EXCERPT

Garren pushed away from the wall and into the light of the lobby. “Looks like I missed out on a lot.”

Aspen ducked his head and went to his desk to dig around in a drawer. The first time Taylor had sent him shopping for office supplies, Aspen had bought random sheets of kids’ stickers. On the rare occasion Taylor performed child evaluations, a little bribery to bring out good behavior never hurt. Aspen came away with two sheets of fairy stickers.

“Not too much. We’re working on crowns and a new kingdom.” Aspen swerved around Garren, his eyes twinkling. “Do you want a crown?”

Garren narrowed his eyes on Aspen. He put his hands on Aspen’s shoulders to stop him and leaned in to whisper, “That was low. There’s no way I can refuse those pixies. I’m going to end up with a glittery, construction-paper crown glued to my head, aren’t I?”

Aspen looked over his shoulder. “Don’t worry there won’t be glitter on yours. I’ll be the queen,” he murmured with a grin. “So you’ll need to fill the role as king.”

Garren shook his head. “You’re trouble.”

Aspen shimmied to dislodge Garren’s hands. “You just figured that out?”

With a resigned sigh Garren followed him.

“Girls, I found someone else who needs a crown,” Aspen declared, gesturing at Garren.

The tykes jumped up and down. Garren fought the urge to reach out and hug Aspen for giving them this moment of levity even at Garren’s expense.
Aspen held out the stickers, and the enthusiasm magnified until the girls were dancing around the room. “Thank you, thank you, thank you,” the girls chanted in a singsong fashion.

A softly murmured, “Oh my,” came from behind Garren.

Garren turned to yet again see the shimmer of tears in Mrs. Burgett’s eyes, but a smile accompanied the moisture.

Aspen grinned back at her. “I hope you don’t mind. The girls have been fantastic. We’ve managed to make crowns and bracelets.”

“Even for you, Mommy,” one of the twins piped up and ran over to Mrs. Burgett to carefully hand her the items as though they were made of glass.

Mrs. Baker cradled them. “Thank you, Maryann.”

“Becca and Mr. Aspen helped,” Maryann replied.

“And we ate apples and cheese crackers,” Becca added.

Garren looked briefly at Aspen. He’d seen Aspen eating the same things earlier in the week.

“That was very nice of Mr. Aspen,” Mrs. Burgett said with a hitch in her voice. “But we have to go now, girls.”

“Oh,” the girls replied with exaggerated pouts on both their faces.

“Say thank-you to Mr. Aspen,” Mrs. Burgett directed.

Both girls ran over to Aspen and threw their arms around his waist. “Sorry we didn’t get a chance to make your crown,” Becca said.

“That’s fine, sweetheart. I’ll be sure to make a matching one when you leave,” Aspen assured her.

“You need to make two,” Maryann interjected. “One for the big king behind you. That way we’ll know you’re helping rule the kingdom even if we can’t see you.”
Garren wanted to pick the girl up and hug her. Tell her that everything would work itself out and she’d never be hurt again. While it was a possibility if Mrs. Burgett went through with the charges, he wouldn’t make promises he couldn’t keep.

“Thank you, Mr. Aspen,” Mrs. Burgett said. “You don’t know how much I appreciate you taking care of my girls.”

“You’re welcome,” Aspen responded.

Maryann and Becca skipped over to their mom, and grabbed hold of her hands as they exited the office.

Garren stared after their retreating backs. He grimaced at the tattered clothes and worn shoes. His jaw clenched, and he pivoted and stalked back to his office. The lump in his throat threatened to shatter his control of his emotions. He made it through the door, placed his hands on his desk, and breathed deeply. Mrs. Burgett reminded him of his mother.

Aspen lightly touched his back, and Garren jerked around to gaze at him.

“I know you’ll do all you can,” Aspen confided.

“And you?” Garren cracked and cupped Aspen’s face with one hand. “You gave those little girls your lunch and made them laugh. You took away their stress and let them be kids.”

Aspen glanced away. “I did what anyone else would do. They deserve to have as much joy as every other child.”

“You’re wrong. Not everyone would do what you did. I think most would have set them in the lobby and spent the time telling them to be quiet.” Garren had seen that reality time and time again.
Aspen shrugged.

Garren caved and leaned in until his lips were mere inches from Aspen’s. “You are so beautiful.”

Aspen didn’t back away. His breath came faster, and his eyes flashed with that same glow Garren had seen in the past.

“Garren,” Aspen whispered with a thread of uncertainty.

Garren brushed his thumb over Aspen’s full lower lip, and desire zinged through his body when Aspen’s tongue peeked out to trace the path. Garren’s brain screamed what a huge mistake kissing Aspen would be, but at that point he wasn’t being ruled by his head.
