Endings and Beginnings exclusive scene: An interview with Jarod

Of all the characters KC and I wrote, Jarod struck a chord with me. He’s 50, and all he wants it to serve. But in his world, submissives are young, twinky things, something he most certainly is not. When we wrote it, I will admit, the first section of the book made me cry buckets. I had bloggers write to me and say that they’d never cried over an excerpt before, so that let me know we were onto something special. Today we’re taking the opportunity to interview Jarod for the Endings and Beginnings tour. Unfortunately, one blog was unable to post their stop, so this little tidbit would have gone unposted, and we couldn’t have that.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Jarod Pearce.
Character Interview Questions
1. Now that you’ve gotten together, what comes next?
“What comes next? Well, the short answer is hopefully a long, happy life with Eli. I’ve already lost more than I can bear, so if I get one wish, that’s the one. But as for what comes next in our lives? That is a little harder to talk about.
I know Eli loves me. Everything he does shows it. The man quit his job to stay home with me, because when I had my heart attack, he wasn’t there. Don’t get me wrong, I understand it wasn’t his fault. He was at work, and he had no control over it. But I think that episode changed him. He realized that he had something precious to him, and the thought of losing it pushed him to make sure it never happened.
But the problem is, Eli’s not cut out for this stay-at-home life. When I lived with Phillip, the money thing was never an issue. We didn’t spend it willy-nilly, but if we wanted to go to the opera, a simple phone call guaranteed us the best seats in the house. When Phillip wanted us to go eat, he’d fly us to Paris and we’d sit at a little bistro with an army of servers at our beck and call. We’d have bottles of their most expensive wines, stuff ourselves on escargot appetizers and we’d have Magret de Canard Sauce Cerises—which I had to explain to Eli was roasted duck with a sun dried cherry sauce. With the exception of his birthday dinner, Eli’s good to go with a burger and chips and whatever they had on draft.
And though I might not say it, I do find myself more comfortable in Eli’s world. I loved Phillip with my whole heart and everything that I am, but I came from a home where money was tight, but overflowing with love. It’s why I felt so comfortable in Eli’s home, but now we’re going to be jumping into the fire and trying something new for both of us. It’s scary, but it’s also exciting.”
- What was the hardest thing for you to overcome that you didn’t expect to be an issue?
“I know that most people would think it would be our age, but that wasn’t really it. Not really. When Peter and I talked about losing our loved ones, I admit I got scared. But more for Eli than me. It hurts to lose someone, and I never want to hurt Eli.
For me the biggest obstacle to overcome was my mother. I love her to bits, I really do. But she can be somewhat…pushy when it comes to me. When Eli came to visit, she had already started picking out the china pattern for us. I needed her to step back, because I didn’t want to scare Eli away.
And then there was that whole episode with the vibrator…probably best if we don’t talk about that, though.”
- Who or what makes you laugh out loud?
“Scott without a doubt. He’s a manic little ball of energy. The only time I’ve ever seen him actually sit still without fidgeting is when he’s writing. Then his face is a joy to behold. You can see the emotions he’s writing plainly there for all to see. My favorite thing to watch is when he’s writing something sad. He gets so into his world that he cries with the characters. He’s probably the most precious thing in the world to me, because despite his parents, he’s grown up to be a simply incredible man.”
- What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
“I don’t get to eat it as much as I used to. Eli watches my diet like a hawk. Every now and again we’ll splurge and have a small bowl of chocolate chip cookie dough. But if we do, I have to walk an extra half mile. Still, it’s a good trade, I think.”
- What movie will you watch over and over again?
“Oh damn. The Longest Ride with Scott Eastwood and Alan Alda. I watched it with my mother, and both of us were in tears at several points in the movie. But I remember one thing that Alan Alda said, and I try to keep it in mind: “Love requires sacrifice.”
Eli gave up his life to take care of me, even though he’s my Dom. Now we have a chance to do something wonderful together. But to do it means giving up all that I’ve found. Can I do it? How can I not?”
